Field guide / Gold

Read the bar. Understand the price.

Weight, fineness, format and the costs surrounding a gold purchase.

Start with the metal content

A product’s total mass and its fine gold content are different quantities. A fineness of 999.9 means 999.9 parts per thousand. Compare fine metal weight on a consistent basis. Some product descriptions state fine weight directly; others state gross weight and fineness. Do not reduce an already stated fine weight a second time.

A troy ounce has a specific meaning

One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. It differs from an ordinary avoirdupois ounce. Our Quote Comparator accepts either a gross weight in grams or a gross weight in troy ounces, then applies the stated fineness. Use a current AUD reference per fine troy ounce if you want a meaningful comparison.

Format changes the questions

Cast bars, minted bars and coins can have different fabrication premiums, packaging and dealer acceptance terms. A lower price per item can simply reflect a smaller quantity. Ask about the same metal content, authentication, collection and resale conditions before comparing total costs.

Provenance is more than a photograph

Record the refiner or mint, product specification and the documentation offered. Pallion’s 2025 sustainability report discusses its ProvCheck authentication and provenance application. That is a provider capability, not a service operated or verified by this website. Confirm coverage for the exact product with its issuer.

Keep the purchase and exit records together

Retain the dated quote, invoice, product description and any serial or custody record securely. Before purchase, understand how a future buyer would verify the product and what charges could apply. Avoid posting holdings, serial numbers or storage locations in public.
